The lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans now enjoys a 40-acre revitalized wetlands after years of neglect. Rashida Ferdinand, founder of Sankofa Community Development Corporation (CDC), recognized poor drainage, trash dumping and hurricane damage destroyed the wetland. This community group worked to reinvigorate the land.

“Hurricane protection is a major concern in the community, but there’s a lack of trust in the infrastructure systems that are supposed to protect us,” Ferdinand told the Audubon Society.

Sankofa restored natural flood barriers. Sankofa Wetlands Park is now home to hiking trails, picnic benches and wheelchair-accessible trails connecting to the Lower Ninth. Businesses there are seeing more visitors since the projects completion.
