Learning to Listen to Yourself Again

Reiki and the Practice of Inner Awareness

There was a period of my life where I realized I had stopped truly listening to myself.

I was functioning. Getting things done. Showing up where I needed to show up. But underneath all of it, I felt disconnected from my own body, emotions, and inner voice. I had become so used to staying busy and pushing forward that I barely noticed how tense, overstimulated, and exhausted I actually was.

And honestly, I think a lot of us live this way for longer than we realize.

Modern life makes it easy to stay distracted. There is always something demanding attention. Work, messages, responsibilities, social media, noise, pressure, expectations. We become so focused outward that we slowly lose touch with what is happening inward.

At some point, I noticed I was moving through most days almost automatically.

Ignoring fatigue.

Holding tension constantly in my body.

Overthinking everything.

Feeling emotionally overwhelmed while also strangely disconnected from my emotions at the same time.

I would tell myself I just needed to keep going and eventually things would settle down. But the truth was, my nervous system never really had a chance to settle.

What Reiki began teaching me, gently and slowly, was how to listen again.

Not through force or analyzing every thought, but through awareness in stillness.

Through paying attention to the quieter signals my body had been trying to communicate all along.

I had to pick up my practice on the daily and be curious.

At first, the shifts were subtle.

I noticed I was breathing more deeply.

Sleeping better.

Reacting less intensely to stress.

Feeling calmer in situations that normally overwhelmed me.

Sometimes emotions would surface unexpectedly during or after Reiki sessions. Other times I simply noticed a feeling of spaciousness inside myself that had been missing for a long time.

What did I notice?

Finally unclenching my jaw.

Taking a full breath.

Realizing how exhausted I truly was.

Recognizing that I needed rest without feeling guilty for it.

The more I slowed down, the more I started noticing how disconnected I had become from my own needs.

And I think many of us are taught to override ourselves constantly.

We ignore intuition.

Push through exhaustion.

Minimize stress.

Distract ourselves from emotion.

Stay busy enough that we never have to sit quietly with ourselves for very long.

But the body is always communicating.

Tension.

Fatigue.

Emotion.

Sensation.

Through subtle shifts we often miss when life is moving too fast.

Reiki helped me begin reconnecting with those signals in a way that felt safe and compassionate rather than overwhelming.

I’ve found that inner awareness is not about becoming hyper-focused on every emotion or endlessly trying to “fix” myself. It is simply the practice of becoming present enough to ask:

What am I feeling right now?

What does my body need?

Where am I holding tension?

What helps me feel grounded?

What leaves me feeling drained?

These questions seem simple, but many of us rarely give ourselves the time to honestly sit with them.

With Reiki practice I feel —

Safer in my own body.

More emotionally balanced.

Connected to myself after years of disconnection.

These changes build slowly over time, but they change everything.

A Simple Awareness Practice

Something I come back to often is simply sitting quietly for a few minutes and checking in with myself without trying to change anything.

You can try it too:

  1. Sit comfortably somewhere quiet.
  2. Take a few slow breaths.
  3. Let your shoulders soften.
  4. Notice where your body feels tense or relaxed.
  5. Ask yourself gently:
    • What am I feeling right now?
    • What do I need today?
    • What has my body been trying to tell me?
  6. Sit with whatever comes up without judgment.

You do not need perfect answers.

The practice is simply noticing.

Reiki has helped me realize that healing is not always about becoming someone new.

Sometimes it is about returning to yourself.

Returning to the parts of you that became quiet beneath stress, distraction, exhaustion, and survival mode.

Learning to listen again.

If you’re feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, or simply longing for space to slow down and reconnect with yourself, I offer virtual Reiki sessions designed to support relaxation, emotional balance, and deeper inner awareness in a calm and supportive environment.
